Fast fixation (no fixation)

Currently, there is no intermaxillary fixation after the bimaxillary osteotomy.

Why there is no intermaxillary fixation
  • It precisely realigns the jaw joint during the surgery. In this case, the operational technique assists the joint to fall in place comfortably.
  • The muscles around the relocated lower jaw are controlled to minimize the force trying to pull the chin back to the position before the surgery.
Advantages of not performing intermaxillary fixation
  • It can reduce discomfort by allowing the patient to breathe through the mouth after the surgery.
  • It can shorten the period it takes to restore bodily functions in ordinary life like speaking or eating.
When you need intermaxillary fixation
  • The rubber band is used to adjust the position if the asymmetry was serious before the surgery or the jaw tends to fall back to the position before the surgery due to strong muscles around the chin. However, you can open your mouth in this case.
  • For people with open bite (The fixation may be required for 2 days depending on circumstances)
